What Radio Taxis did to make a difference

Radio Taxis Group Limited, the UK’s largest black cab operators, are taking steps to cut carbon dioxide emissions across their fleet of 3,000 black cabs.

They have launched the world’s first BioFuel created specifically for taxis. Called E3, the bio-diesel has been developed in partnership with UK based company, Infinitum Energy, and is a 30% blend of UK grown rape seed oil and standard ultra-low sulphur diesel.

Extensive trials over 18 months have shown that E3 delivers a seven per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, a 4.7 per cent reduction in particulate matter and significant cuts in other harmful emissions. A 9.31 per cent improvement in miles per gallon also means that drivers will now be able to travel further than they would when using ULSD, with no additional cost. At the same time, filling up with E3 will extend the life of the vehicle’s engine.

The combined impact of reduced CO2 emissions and improved mileage per gallon means that the new fuel has the potential to deliver a fleet-wide cut of almost 3,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent per annum.

E3 is the latest phase of Radio Taxis Group’s ongoing environmental management programme, which has seen them commit to becoming CarbonNeutral®, introduce responsible vehicle purchasing programmes, and develop a new additives package for fleets.
