Solar water heating

Solar hot water systems work by absorbing energy from the sun and using it to heat water. They work by using collectors, usually placed on the roof of a building, where they ‘collect’ the sun’s heat and use it to heat liquid which is then stored via water storage systems and tanks.

Choosing a system suitable to your needs requires consideration of a range of factors, including the area of south facing roof, the existing water heating system and your budget. A competent accredited installer will be able to assess your situation and discuss with you the best configuration to meet your needs.

Benefits of solar water heating:

  • No CO2 emissions.
  • Low maintenance.
  • Long lifespan – some systems can last up to 35 years.
  • Utilise an inexhaustible, renewable source of energy.

Cost and payback period

This type of system may only be economically viable in an organization that has a high demand for hot water, such as a restaurant. The payback period can be up to 14 years.
