Janet

Along with installing loft insulation, Janet has made other big lifestyle changes – like cycling to work.

Where is your property and how old is it?

We live in a three bed end terrace in Wanstead built in 1910.

What work have you had done or what lifestyle changes have you made?

I installed 270mm of loft insulation when I moved into the house. I have original 1910 stained glass windows and didn’t want to take them out and double glaze. As a compromise I got someone to make double glazed windows for the large panes (which were plane glass), leaving the small stained glass windows as they were.

I’ve replaced light bulbs with low energy ones and I wash clothes at 30 degrees. I don’t even notice the difference on whites. I no longer leave appliances on standby. I also cycle to work at least two days a week and more in the summer. I recently changed my car from a two litre to a one litre vehicle.

Who carried out the work?

I used a contractor for the roof insulation and a local carpenter for the double glazing. As for the car, I researched it myself by comparing emissions; miles per gallon; cost of road tax and car insurance; purchase price and value for money.

Any lessons learned and any advice for other Londoners?

I have already seen the savings. Switching to a smaller car has helped me reduce emissions and it’s easier to find a parking place.

What has been the impact on your life?

It only takes me slightly longer to cycle to work and I feel much healthier. I got free cycle maps from Transport for London which show you quiet routes through parks, along canals and using residential roads.
