Even as a renter, you can make positive steps to make a difference says Abigail.
Where is your flat and how old is it?
The property is a Victorian terraced house that’s been converted into flats; it’s located in Clapham.
What work have you had done or what lifestyle changes have you made?
I’ve installed energy efficient light-bulbs. I turn appliances off standby and turn my washing machine’s dial down to 30.
I don’t drive, and try to walk as much as possible. I’m a big fan of jumpers and blankets as an alternative to using the central heating. We’ll be getting a new TV soon and it’ll be Energy Saving Recommended.
Who has carried out the work?
I rent so there isn’t much in the house I can alter but the flat was already fitted with energy efficient light bulbs and I believe the boiler is fairly new. As a tenant I make sure I do all the behavioural things though and do as much as I can because it takes no effort.
Any lessons learned and advice for other Londoners?
Even as a renter, you can make positive steps to make a difference. The actions I take are straightforward and simple to do. It’s part of my routine now to switch things off so it takes no time at all.
I also believe that should my boiler break that my landlord would be receptive to me telling him about energy efficiency and how to tackle some of the bigger measures in the flat. When I buy a property, I’ll certainly take these lessons with me and apply further measures to save energy.
What has been the impact on your life?
I’m unsure of the savings in money as I haven’t lived in this flat long. The main benefit for me is the knowledge that I’m doing something and taking action.
