Loft insulation

Tammy found help through a Student Savers scheme run by her local council to install cavity wall and loft insulation.

Where is your house and how old is it?

It is a 1950s house in Uxbridge

What work have you had done or what lifestyle changes have you made?

I installed cavity wall insulation and topped up the loft insulation.

Who carried out the work?

I used to let the property through Brunel University who told me about the Student Savers scheme. I made a phone call about the scheme and they arranged for the quote to be made and for an installation to go ahead.

Any lessons learned and advice for other London landlords?

I would definitely recommend insulation to other landlords. It didn’t cost an awful lot of money. You benefit and the tenants benefits and I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t do it.

What has been the impact on the life of your tenants?

Ever since the house was insulated it’s been very warm, and in summer the insulation keeps the heat out. The tenants have only just started putting the heating on (late October). I’m quite green so I like to make my houses as environmentally friendly as I can.

Did you get a grant or any other financial assistance?

I got a discount provided by EDF through the Student Savers scheme run by CEN and Hillingdon Council. They provided an interest free loan so that I was able to pay monthly by direct debit from my account until the grant was all paid for.
