Douglas
Douglas tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible in building his extension. He’s even considering upgrading to a condensing boiler.
Where is your house and how old is it?
It’s near Bow, near Mile End and Victoria Park and was built around 1860
What work have you had done or what lifestyle changes have you made?
When building an extension we tried to use natural materials where possible – rubber floors, timber frame construction etc. We also put in additional loft insulation and double glazing.
Thermostats are now on all radiators; are replacing all bulbs with low energy bulbs and we also make sure all appliances are switched off when not in use. We installed an efficient, combination boiler, and are considering upgrading that to a condensing boiler. From April to October we leave our heating off and wear an extra layer of clothes to compensate. Our dishwasher and washing machine cycles are turned to a lower temperature; we dry clothes outside, or on a clothes horse rather than in a dryer.
In the summer we use grey water on the garden which we have turned into an outdoor space without using any chemical sprays.
We also have a small, run-around car that is extremely efficient. We use public transport everyday and the whole family have bikes that are used 3-4 times a week at least. We went on holiday by train to avoid flying and try to eat organic food wherever possible.
Who carried out the work?
Heating and energy systems were installed by an expert. Virtually everything else can be achieved DIY. My only problem has been finding good, inexpensive materials and reliable and comparable information.
Any lessons learned and advice for other Londoners?
Many of the changes we’ve implemented, turning down the thermostat for instance, had at little or no cost.
We wanted cavity wall insulation but not all older buildings have wall cavities. One solution we’re looking at is to install bookcases on all outside facing walls. We’re told this will act as a ‘thermal buffer’.
What has been the impact on your life?
I haven’t particularly measured the benefits, but certainly appreciate a ‘feel good factor’ in doing these things.
Did you get a grant or any other financial assistance?
I didn’t need a grant for the changes.
