Solar water heating systems

Solar water heating systems can provide you with a third of your domestic hot water needs.

You don’t have to go to the Caribbean to wallow in water warmed by the sun: no, you can have it here, at home in London, if you have a southeast to southwest-facing roof.

Solar water heating systems use the heat of the sun to directly warm your water. They can usually provide you with about a third of your domestic hot water needs. They work alongside your conventional water heating system and can be used in the home or for larger applications, such as swimming pools.

The average domestic system reduces CO2 emissions by around 350 kg per year and takes about £40 a year off your hot water bills, depending on the fuel it replaces.

To benefit properly, you will need 3-4 square metres of southeast to southwest facing roof that receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day.

The typical installation cost for a domestic system is £3,200 – £4,500. There are various types, with the more advanced evacuated tube system being slightly more expensive than the simpler flat plate system.

You’ll need to contact an accredited installer who’ll assess your situation, your requirements and any existing equipment before advising you.
