Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easy to carry out and can save you £££s

Have you got money to burn? Because if your loft isn’t insulated, that’s almost literally what you are doing.

Houses with lofts that are poorly insulated (or not insulated at all) lose as much as 15% of their heat through their roofs.

Amazingly, around 70% (that’s nearly three quarters) of the lofts in London are currently uninsulated / unfilled. If every household in London had loft insulation we would save £28 million and 240,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. That’s enough greenhouse gas to fill 910,000 tube train carriages.

The thing is, it’s not difficult to put right – getting insulation installed isn’t complicated at all. Figures show that more and more Londoners have realised this and are insulating their lofts, and are seeing the rewards.

Loft insulation works by acting as a blanket, trapping heat rising from the house below. If you currently have no loft insulation and you install the recommended 270mm depth you could save around £110 a year on your heating bills and nearly one tonne of CO2 per year.

The installation of loft insulation can be carried out by a professional, but it is a relatively simple DIY task, although you will have to wear protective clothing, gloves and a mask. Insulation is simply laid over the floor of the loft, between and then over the joists if they are visible.

If you install your loft insulation yourself, costs start at around £250 and you’ll find that it pays for itself in about two years.

Or you can take advantage of the Mayor’s offer with British Gas.
