Tips on using your washing machine more efficiently and advice on buying new machines
Londoners do a lot of washing. The 2.8 million washing machines in homes across London, each do an average of 274 washes a year – that’s three quarters of a billion loads per annum! That washing is using a lot of electricity.
But modern detergents work just as effectively at lower temperatures, so try washing your clothes at 30oC instead of higher temperatures. This will use around 40% less electricity and that means you save money.
In fact, if every London household washed its clothes at 30oC, we would save 110,000 tonnes of CO2 and £21 million worth of electricity a year.
Energy Saving Recommended products
A more efficient washing machine could make even greater savings, both financial and environmental.
If you’re looking for a new machine, make sure you buy one that’s Energy Saving Recommended. These models could cut your energy consumption by up to a third compared to an old washing machine, meaning you could avoid throwing away up to £8 a year on your electricity bills and saving 42kg of CO2.
If every household in London replaced their old washing machine with an Energy Saving Recommended model, £12 million would be saved, along with 61,000 tonnes of CO2 – enough to fill Wembley Stadium eight times over.
Thousands of Londoners are already changing how they use their washing machines.
Will you remember to follow the basics?:
- Only wash at 30oC
- Fill the machine up – or use the half load programme
- Switch it off – don’t leave it on standby
This way we can all cut CO2 and save money.
