Reason(s) for contacting Green Homes Concierge Service:

Passionate about the environment, in the process of renovating a property, wanted to save energy and make a gesture.

Dan Tallis, a 34-year-old BBC web designer, had big green plans for his Edwardian three-bed purchased recently with his girlfriend Nicola. So when he heard about Green Homes Concierge Service, it was a match made in footprint-cutting heaven.

Originally, Tallis called the Green Homes Concierge Service hoping to find out more about microgeneration and wastewater management. But following a concierge assessment, he ended up being introduced to a whole heap of ways to save energy.

Inspired by the recommendations in the assessment report, Dan had his loft fully insulated and had a ‘water butt’ installed in his garden. He also revised some of his previous plans, taking on-board the advice from the service’s experts. “I was really hoping to get some roof-top solar panels or something that would make a gesture,” said Tallis. “But Green Homes Concierge Service helped me to recognise that some of these bigger solutions are not always the most efficient.”

So how did Dan feel about the Green Homes Concierge Service energy makeover service overall? “The assessment was very useful,” said Tallis. “I think everyone should have one done to see where they are losing energy.”

Dan added that he was particularly inspired by the air-tightness test, which uses a non-toxic pen-sized smoke stick which lets out a tiny amount of harmless vapor to identify where heat escapes, and the thermal imaging process. He also plans to implement further previously unconsidered measures including thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s), which allow temperature to be room-specific and automatically adjust once the desired temperature is reached.

Stats:

  • Dan Tallis’s property was emitting 4.9 Tonnes of CO2 per year.
  • The combined actions of properly insulating the roof and ensuring builders snugly fitted new windows could reduce this by as much as 1.4 tonnes per year.
